Classroom Favorites I'm Loving All Over Again 💖

Being back in the classroom this year has reminded me what I love so much about picture books. And there's been something so special about rediscovering songs I wrote years ago and seeing them through fresh eyes with my new group of students.

Here are three book-inspired kidlit tunes that are still close to my heart (and are perfect for Valentine's Day):

Love Is

Inspired by the book by my dear friend and mentor Diane Adams, illustrated by Claire Keane

This tender story follows a little girl who finds a lost duckling and learns what it means to truly care for someone, both the holding on and the letting go. When I set this story to music, I wanted to capture that gentle rhythm of caring for something you love. You can find this one on YouTube and streaming platforms!

This Is Not A Valentine

Inspired by the book by my pal Carter Higgins, who is a former librarian, illustrated by Lucy Ruth Cummins

A boy insists that the gifts he's giving his friend (a lucky hopscotch rock, his favorite superhero cape, the jelly half of his PB&J) are definitely NOT valentines. I love how this book redefines what it means to show someone you care, trading glitter and roses for genuine attention and everyday treasures. This one lives on my YouTube Channel for a fun school-friendly singalong.

I Love You Already

Inspired by the book by Jory John, illustrated by Benji Davies

Bear just wants a quiet day to himself. Duck just wants to spend time with his friend. The hilarious discussion between the funniest introvert and extrovert duo is a great conversation starter for kids. And I love the humor of loving someone even when they drive you a little bit bonkers. Singalong on my YouTube channel and streaming!

All three of these songs are available on my YouTube channel, and the Love Is Song and I Love You Already Song have been recorded on albums over the years, so you can stream them wherever you listen to music.

What are your favorite songs from the archives for Valentine's Day celebrations?

Sending lots of love to the teachers, parents, writers, and readers out there! ❤️
